Drumming improves movement, coordination, self confidence, communication skill, and mental focus, reduces stress, and makes you feel younger, happier, and healthier. There is extraordinary new neuroscience research in support of drumming and the brain, and Stephen spoke on this at Wright State University. His power point "Engage the Rhythms of your Brain" is now available on Slideshare.net, and in the viewer below. This presentation covers drumming applications in STEAM3 education teaching methods, special education, sensory processing disorders, trance work, and cites benefits in a wide range of health disorders, including, autism, Parkinson's Disease, hydrocephalus, PTSD, post TBI, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, obesity, and aging. As a brain injury & hydrocephalus survivor, Stephen "walks the talk" on drumming and shares his extraordinary story and discoveries by keynote. In addition, he plays in drum ensembles and community drum circles with the Orange County Drum Circle groups.
Stephen underwent drum circle facilitation training with Arthur Hull in 2005,
has been playing music all his life, and began undertaking research with music
and the brain after suffering a 1992 brain injury and the placement of a CNS
shunt. His personal challenges drove his research into new areas of drumming,
including, rhythm & movement (proprioception), sensory processing disorders,
brain wave entrainment, cognition, and now trance states. Stephen's earlier neuroscience efforts led to the design & patenting of a CNS shunt monitoring system termed the DiaCeph Test, useful in the non-invasive evaluation of shunt malfunction. Designed around the same time and concept as the IMPACT Test for post concussion monitoring, the DiaCeph Test could be an app for a mobile phone today. Since 1996, Stephen has been an advocate for individuals with CNS shunts for the neurological disorder, hydrocephalus, and has championed several initiatives with the Food & Drug Administration. Stephen later authored a critical supporting study termed CNS Shunt Selection for Hydrocephalus, which combined the DiaCeph Test with research from the University of Heidelberg, and which he has been using to manage his care and his last five (5) brain shunt revisions. Hydrocephalus monitoring consults are available to individuals with hydrocephalus and problematic CNS shunts.
